Google lifted its limitation to have 160 character-lengths for the snippets and extended it up to 230 characters. It was shifted to this much descriptive length to make the snippets more definitive to the audience.

Now, before understanding more about it, let’s know what’s Google Snippet.

Google snippet is a small descriptive text that automatically pops up in a Search Engine Result Page. Also, when users enter any query, the search engine showcases an essential description of that content or page. Or, it displays the whole summary of the page’s information as what it contains on the entire page.

It’s a summary that we call a snippet, and along with it, Google even shows the URL or the link to the page plus its title.

Increased Snippet Length

Google has the restriction to have 160 character length given to the snippet that includes spaces too. But now, Google will showcase snippets that will expand up to 230 characters along with counting your blank spaces.

Thus, in this way, users can have access to read lengthier web pages’ descriptions. In addition, it will make it easier for users to know what the webpage is all about.

The Official Announcement

On behalf of Google, a spokesperson quoted saying, “We recently made a change to provide more descriptive and useful snippets, to help people better understand how pages are relevant to their searches. Unfortunately, this resulted in snippets becoming slightly longer, on average.”

The Latest Trend

A popular SEO company witnessed the trend of more length snippets in the UK. So, it was the move by Google to make things easy to use and more friendly for their users.

A Divided House

On the flip side, the SEO universe is divided over this new development. According to some people, from now onwards, the content’s meta descriptions must be extended to a maximum snippet length of 230 characters that must be in-synchronized with Google policy.

While many others are subjected to this thought process, this group often recommends that snippets are dynamically generated based on the user’s query, content, and the meta description that’s visible on a given web page.

Therefore, Google needs to pull that much length of content from the web page itself. Also, as of now, there is no requirement for lengthy snippet descriptions.

Search engine optimization’s world is unquestionably volatile. And one never knows when something new will come up, or a reputed trend will get reversed.
